If you have a computer that’s got a virus it can be very frustrating, to say the least.
It used to be that you had to take your computer into a repair depot like ours and get it cleaned up. The more tech savvy crowd has been making discs or flash drives that can clean most infections, but they are a pain to update and sometimes won’t catch everything, because of the nature of the infection.
Now there is a better solution I would like to share with you: FixMe Stick.
This little USB flash drive is something you can buy and do your own virus triage. It works with Windows XP, Vista, 7 & 8.
How it works is pretty simple.
If you can get your computer to the point that Windows loads you can simply inset the FixMe stick and double click the program.
If your computer has been taken over to the point that Windows can’t boot, you can still use the FixMe Stick. You’ll have to turn your computer off and select the USB drive to boot from on startup. The exact method for doing that differs, depending on your model, but if you ask one of us at the Computer Department of London Drugs, we can help you figure that out.
There are some unique tricks that the FixMe Stick uses to attack viruses:
– Combo of Kaspersky, Vipre, and Sophos licenses
– Boots separately from operating system so infections aren’t running
– Obliterates even the toughest infections without user intervention
– Funky tech inside that’s so easy to use you don’t have to be a nerd
I tested the FixMe Stick to see how it works in the real world. First I used a clean install of Windows 7. I searched a few terms on Google like “addictive free games” and “how to download YouTube videos” and clicked on the first few results. Within minutes I was asked to install what looked like a Flash Player but it wasn’t from Adobe. After clicking through that and rebooting the computer several more infections locked on. The computer was still usable but slower and the concerning thing was that the internet still worked fine. I could have gone on and checked my email or social media accounts and spread the infection to everyone I know!
I plugged in the FixMe Stick and followed the prompts. The process was remarkably easy and I didn’t have to do anything to reboot into the FixMe Stick.
When the FixMe program loaded it found my WIFI network and updated itself to the latest virus definitions.
It ran for about an hour. Without me clicking anything it had cleaned 14 infections.
When I rebooted into Windows I was clean again and ready to install a security program to prevent his from happening in the first place.
If you get stuck with a sick PC and get a FixMe Stick you won’t be disappointed. They also offer extensive support if it doesn’t go as planned.
Works for 1 year on up to 3 PCs.
